Sunil’s Understanding Of How The World Works

Sunil sees the world as a very greedy place. He learns that without family it’s every man for himself. He understands that you need to care just for yourself and your family, if you have a family.

“He knew why he and the other children received ice cream only when newspaper photographers cane to visit…” This shows that the nuns didn’t really care about the orphans, I could even show that the orphans had bad experiences and weren’t taken care of properly. This shows that the nuns thought of themselves  only. Even though she knew the troubled backgrounds of the poor orphans, they only wanted money, which was supposed to be spent on the orphans to try and make their lives better. The nuns knew that ice cream was a very big issue or delicacy to the children so when the photographers  came they gave them ice cream to make them seem happy and show that the establishment was a positive for the orphans, whereas it was really for themselves

“Sunil alone watched out for  Sunita…” This illustrates ‘every man for himself ‘ because even though Sunil has a father, he at the young age of only 10 has to take care of his younger sister, alone. When the father is at work, Sunil has to take charge, but even when the father is free and can take care of his own children, he’s drunk, leaving his only two young children alone, knowing that anything can happen to them.

“….She’d tracked down Sunita in the south of the city, then barrelled into his fathers hut to say his children were going to die, the way he was drinking…”

“When they reached the black iron gate of the orphanage though, Asha dropped their hands and left..”

Chapter 2 Summary

Chapter Two of ‘ Behind The Beautiful Forevers’ introduces Asha a mother, businesswoman and the recently renowned slumlord of Annawadi. This chapter illustrates the character of Asha as greedy and selfish. Asha gains money by giving advice on everything concerned around women, whether it would be their husbands beating them, or trying to get a new job. Asha also got an income by scamming her fellow annawadians. She tries to teach the specialities to her 19 year old daughter, Manju, but Manju is described by Asha as ‘sentimental’ which would interfere with her business and blames it on herself that she didn’t bring her daughter up to be like herself

Homework

Economically, India is developing. The government is getting a large income of money. The already rich are getting even richer, and investors from out of India are investing in Indian businesses. The government barely spend money on the good of the population, for example they upgraded roads, but to impress foreign businessmen and to hide the vast poverty. The Indian economy is rich, but none of it is spent on the poorer population or to help the poorer population
