Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Revision

Duality Of Human Nature

  • The idea that someone has two sides, a bad side and a good side.
  • Jekyll came from a respectable family, who was brought up well.
  • Jekyll tried to eliminate the “evil part of his nature”.

Science and the Explained

  • Jekyll and Lanyon are both scientists, and science represents the real world by experiments and observations.
  • Lanyon avoided Jekyll because Jekyll believes in ghosts and such.
  • Jekyll strongly believes in ghosts, whereas Lanyon only believes in science and that everything needs to be explained.
  • Jekyll embraces magic which get the best of him, ending up in him dying in the end.

The Law and the Unexplained

  • Utterson believes that everybody should the same and fit in, not to be different.
  • Utterson believes everyone follows the law and can’t believe anyone can be as crazy as Jekyll.
  • Utterson can only image people doing the right thing, delusional.
  • Stevenson suggests the law cannot deal with the supernatural.

The Size and Age of Jekyll and Hyde

  • Jekyll is bigger than Hyde, so when Hyde’s small body is found in the bigger clothes of Dr Jekyll, it shows that there are two sides to one person.
  • It portrays that the evil is small in size and personality.
  • Even though Hyde is evil, deep down in Jekyll, he is evil somewhere as well.

Presenting London

Moses’ experience is totally different to Kitcheners lyrics because Kitchener believe that London is perfect, like heaven on earth. He thought that everyone was kind and sociable, when actually Moses who is currently living there highlights the fact that London isn’t all the it may be portrayed to be and in some circumstances, the opposite, such as prejudice against people of colour.

Option Two: Identify what you consider to be the strong images of the city in the extract.

The strong images in the extract include showing the bad weather in London. The first sentence clearly represents this “One grim winter evening… fog sleeping restlessly over that city…”.

The city is presented in the extracts as gloomy

When I sat down and payed my fare, I took out a white handkerchief and blowed my nose.

Through the use of non standard English, both the reader and character have a similar feeling of homesickness. This can be seen when the writer makes us sympathise for Moses. The writer uses language familiar to Trinidadians, broken English, and this brings out the homesickness feeling that Moses has, trying to fit into London. This can be particularly seen when Moses is in the station waiting, when he gets memories when he sees families greeting each other and “kissing goodbyes”.

The Lonely Londoners

“When Moses sit down and pay his fare he take out a white handkerchief and blow his nose.”

When Moses sat down and payed his fare, he took out a white handkerchief and blowed his nose.

The way he talks is more in the present tense when it should be in the past tense.

What is Moses Aloetta’s perspective on London?

In the first part, Moses sees London negatively, especially the weather.

  1. Space development
  2. Main road development
  3. Parliament development
  4. Military development

The photos showing the change in the Indian Parliament show how it was formerly very ordered and well mannered whereas, in the new parliament it seems very messy e.g. the parliament’s floor is dirty. The current parliament has no dress code and everyone is wearing what they want, very different colours making it seem disorganised. The Old India seemed more formal and smart, everyone was sitting down being respectful, whereas the current parliament seems rowdy.

The photos showing the Indian military contrast how times have changed. In the first picture, everything was very basic and simple. The weapons shown in the picture was the most advanced, weaponry of that age, and as compared to the New India, was nothing. The soldiers had no military attire, just traditional turbans. Whereas the layout and plans of military now have improved and weaponry now is more successful, reliable, but also complicated. It also expresses how the army has developed and expanded.
